Chapter Fourteen

By Saturday night, Anna had responded to the committee’s e-mail and provided “report card feedback” as instructed. Hers was a sound and fair response. She was careful to keep the tone neutral and although it felt weak, she reminded herself that they held the key to her future.

Once that was done, she went home and finished painting her living room. She’d even managed to muscle her dining room table into place, and the room looked so beautiful she texted a picture to Cynda, who was on a blind date with a new guy. Hopefully this one kept his clothes on, at least while they were eating.

Anna had just finished a frozen dinner that was supposed to be lasagna and green beans but tasted more like what she imagined the baby food her niece Olive had recently started eating. Trying to muster up the energy to hang some pictures, Anna noticed her phone vibrated.

Have you ever even watched any football movies?

The Bears were away playing Oregon State, and Anna was afraid to ask if they won or not. She’d look at the score later. Instead of dwelling on whether or not Trey was still dropping the ball, Anna contemplated the question and texted Dane back.

Yes. Jerry Maguire.

Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character wasn’t a jerk.

Yes, he was! Show me the money?

Well, maybe in the beginning, but the guy was under a lot of pressure. It’s a crazy amount of stress to hang on to that level of success.

Anna sat on her couch with her laptop.

What about Friday Night Lights or Remember the Titans? Both incredible football movies.

Haven’t seen them.

Dane sent her the emoji with the rolling eyes, and Anna felt that stupid jump in her stomach. He always managed to make her feel… light. She guessed that’s what it was because even when they were disagreeing, she enjoyed talking with him, or texting in this case.

Breakfast Club? Dane texted.

He taped someone’s butt together.

Her phone rang and when she answered, Dane was laughing. “I forgot about that part.” The sounds of people talking and the familiar airport announcements echoed in the background. “They all made mistakes, though. The nerd brought a flare gun to school.” He kept laughing. “But then they all learned, even the jock.”

“Oh, yes, and that’s exactly how high school works.”

“Professor, you sound so… realistic. I thought that was my job. You’re supposed to be the dreamer in this relationship.” His voice sounded tired and sexy. It was a bit easier talking with him on the phone. His physical presence, those eyes, weren’t on her.

“Relationship? Since when is our sparring a relationship?”

“Since you keep kissing me and I keep kissing you back.”

“Ah, is that all it takes?”

“Pretty incredible kissing.”

Anna exhaled and lay back on her couch. There it was again: the sense of belonging that hearing his voice brought her. “Yes, I suppose it was.”

“I’d like to kiss you again, Anna.”

“You kissed me in the library. That was what? Two days ago.”

“I can’t seem to get enough.”

Me neither. “How’s Trey?”
